Let us introduce ourselves!  We are a group of twelve Grade 5 Inuit students from Hall Beach, Nunavut, Canada.  We're about 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle in a community of approximately 750 people.  From December until March, the temperature with wind chill (and it's always windy this close to the North Pole!) averages around -70 degrees C (-94 F) in February.  Not that we're complaining because we love it here! We have never however, seen a university, museum, dinosaur skeleton or touched a tree so we'd like to see what that is all about.  We'd love it if you could help - every little bit helps and we would be so happy if we can all work together to make this trip a reality.  Please donate whatever you feel comfortable with.  We're so excited... we can hardly wait!  Qujannimiit (Thank you)

January 27, 2014 update

-54 with the windchill lately.  Had a great time watching the igloo builders build an igloo for the welcome back the sun celebrations. You can see a slideshow of it at http://youtu.be/ljBhFexqrpA. Twenty-four hour darkness over with and 52 seconds more sunshine everyday.  By May it will feel like 24 hour sun which will be great.  We're furiously applying for grants and funding.  We've managed to raise $5000 of our total so far.  Our crowdfunding website at Indiegogo is now live at http://igg.me/at/hallbeach5/x/6039600.  Please go there to see our video and check out all the neat things you can get in exchange for your donation.

March 16,2014 update

Balmy -45 with the windchill.  Was really cold yesterday for the table sale but everyone showed up anyway!  Thanks to everyone who has been supporting our Indiegogo campaign and sending money through hallbeach5@gmail.com, we've raised $24,000 towards our goal of $30,000.  We have 3 people flying for free which knocks down our costs and the good people of Toronto are working hard to get us free meals and entry to various venues. So we're down to $30,000 from $40,000!  Yay!  Toronto rocks!

April 7, 2014 update

Well, our 3 free tickets evaporated. We managed to pick up a chaperone who will meet us in Ottawa but we've had to add two more tickets so we're back up to $33,400.  We do however, have almost $28,000 now so we're close!  As soon as we confirm the spellings of names (English names and Inuit names don't always match), we're going to book the tickets!  Our hotel is booked in Toronto - thanks to Holiday Inn group of companies for the discount on rooms - every dollar counts.

April 20,2014 update

Current total is $29,900 and counting.  Tickets are booked!  Going to pay for them today!  Only 8 more school days until we leave.  The kids are soooo excited!

At left you see a picture of a quamatik - a sled built to be towed behind a snow machine.  We use this as a school bus in the winter time to get to and from school - also to go out on the land, visit other communities and basically just for hauling people or gear in the winter months.
